    Schools are racing to add AI to their classrooms. Families who take the wheel first won't be waiting for that race to end.

    The AI Is Already In the Building. The Question Is Whose Building?

    Every few months, a new "AI-powered school" lands in the headlines. There's Alpha School, the $40,000-a-year Florida model where AI tutors handle the bulk of instruction and kids spend the rest of the day on "life skills." There are the chatbot reading coaches in Atlanta, the algorithm-driven lesson plans in suburban Ohio, the coding camps at Princeton for a lucky thirty kids from low-income families. Education reporters are calling it a revolution.

    Here is what those stories bury in the third-to-last paragraph: the revolution is not arriving equally.

    The economic gap in teen AI use reached 24 percentage points in 2025, double what it was in 2024, with nearly half of the highest-income families reporting their teenagers using AI for school, compared to just 19% of the lowest-income families. And the schools most likely to be offering real AI training to teachers? Suburban and majority-white districts with lower poverty levels. So when we talk about "AI in schools" as a democratizing force, we need to ask: which schools, and whose children?

    This is not a technology problem. It is a power problem. And families who recognize that have something schools, bureaucracies, and venture-funded EdTech startups will never have: direct, unmediated access to their own children.

    Think of it this way. For decades, the family car was a status symbol. Then GPS arrived, and suddenly every driver, regardless of income or zip code, had the same navigation tools that used to require a professional driver or a really good paper map. AI, used intentionally inside the home, works the same way. A parent guiding their child through a history project with an AI co-pilot isn't mimicking school. They're doing something school structurally cannot do: building around this child's prior knowledge, this family's cultural reference points, this kid's learning pace on this particular Tuesday.

    That is the Remix Academics premise at its core, and it happens to line up with some inconvenient truths that mainstream education is slow to admit.

    A spring 2025 survey found that 96% of families with an elementary-aged child either did not know about any school-communicated AI policy or explicitly said their school had not communicated anything. Schools are making decisions about AI on behalf of families while keeping those same families almost entirely in the dark. That is not partnership. That is the old top-down model wearing a new headset.

    The families showing up inside the Remix framework understand something important: the goal was never to replicate school at home. The goal is to do what school cannot. And right now, that means using AI the way a family would use any powerful tool: selectively, purposefully, and in service of a vision that the family, not an algorithm, defines.

    A child exploring African American inventors for a science unit doesn't need an AI that was trained on a default curriculum that sidelines those stories. They need a parent who knows what questions to ask the AI, what to push back on, and when to close the laptop and go pick up a book. AI is a co-pilot, not the captain. The family is the captain.

    Nearly two-thirds of parents surveyed believe AI will undermine their children's basic skill development, while 50% believe it can help children learn. Both instincts are right, depending entirely on who's holding the controls.

    The "innovative school" narrative sells parents on the idea that the institution will handle it. That if they can just get their child into the right building, the technology will do the rest. What that story never tells you is that AI systems trained primarily on data from well-resourced schools will likely serve those contexts better, perpetuating existing gaps. The tool learns from its environment. If your family is not in that environment, the tool is not learning from you.

    Families who engage with AI directly, who learn to use it alongside their children rather than waiting for a school district to figure out the policy, are not behind the curve. They are ahead of it. They are building AI literacy in context, tied to real questions their children are actually asking, connected to the world their children are actually living in.

    That is the equity move that doesn't require a $40,000 tuition or a lottery seat at a charter school. It requires intention. And that has always been what family-centered learning runs on.
