Parents are not only arguing about whether AI should be allowed in school. Underneath the policy fight is a simpler question: how much thinking does the child still get to do?
That question is getting louder. The Guardian reported parent concern in places like New York and Oregon, including calls for pauses on student-facing generative AI. K-12 Dive reported that more than half of New York City's council members asked for a two-year moratorium, with student data privacy and weak guardrails at the center of the concern.
The strongest parent move is not panic. It is clarity.
What is a family thinking budget for AI homework?
Stanford SCALE's 2026 review found that the K-12 AI research base is growing quickly, but rigorous evidence is still thin. The review identified only 20 high-quality causal studies out of more than 800 AI-in-education papers in its repository at the time reviewed, and it found no high-quality causal studies of student AI use conducted in U.S. K-12 classrooms.
That does not prove AI is useless. It means parents should not accept vague promises as a learning plan.

A thinking budget asks how much of the assignment is reserved for the student's own brain before the tool steps in. Every AI-supported task should protect three things.
First, protect struggle time. Kids need a little productive friction before they get a shortcut. If the tool gives the answer before the child has tried, the assignment may look cleaner while the skill stays weak.
Second, protect scaffold time. A good support tool should ask better questions, offer hints, model a step, or help the child revise. That is different from doing the work. Parents can ask, "Does this tool guide my child, or does it complete the task?"
Third, protect no-tool proof. At some point, the child should be able to show what they understand without the AI sitting beside them. That might be an oral explanation, a handwritten problem, a short reflection, or a new example they solve alone.
This matters even more for diverse families, disabled students, neurodivergent learners, English learners, and homeschool or hybrid families. AI can offer real access support. Text-to-speech, translation, planning, and feedback can help. But access support still needs a boundary. A tool that helps a child enter the work should not quietly replace the work.
So before the next AI assignment, ask the school three questions:
1. What part of this task must my child do before AI? 2. What is the AI allowed to do? 3. How will you check what my child can do without the tool?
How do parents decide what work should stay human?
That is not anti-technology. That is pro-learning.
The goal is not to make every family an AI policy expert. The goal is to help parents see the difference between a finished product and a stronger thinker.
If your child's school is using AI, ask for the thinking budget. If nobody can explain it, the tool may be moving faster than the learning plan.
