# Your Teen Needs a Human Skills Transcript Before an AI-Proof Major
Parents are getting a lot of loud advice right now.
Some people are saying college is still essential. Some are saying AI will make the old college path less reliable. Some students are already changing majors because they are worried about what AI will do to the job market.
That is a real concern. Gallup recently reported that 16% of currently enrolled college students say they have changed their major or field of study because of AI's potential impact on work. Associate degree students reported that shift at 19%, and bachelor degree students at 13%.
Then educator Esther Wojcicki, known for her work with young people and media education, made a different point in a recent Business Insider piece. Her argument was not just that students need college content. It was that young adults need the human growth that comes from being around people, learning responsibility, and practicing social skills.
Both signals matter. But families should not turn them into panic.
The question is not simply, "What major is AI-proof?"
The better question is, "What can my child prove they can do as a human being?"
AI-Proof Is Too Small
No parent can guarantee which career path will be untouched by AI. That is not a realistic standard.
What we can do is help our kids build evidence of skills that travel across paths. Communication. Judgment. Teamwork. Writing. Public speaking. Listening. Leadership. Asking better questions. Handling feedback without falling apart. Finishing hard work without needing constant supervision.
That is the transcript many families are not building.
Your child may have grades. They may have test scores. They may even know how to use AI tools. But do they have proof that they can explain an idea clearly to another person? Can they revise after critique? Can they lead a small project? Can they interview someone, summarize what they learned, and make a decision?
Those skills will matter whether your child chooses college, trade school, entrepreneurship, military service, a certificate program, or a job.
Build the Human Skills Transcript
This does not need to be complicated.
Start a simple document with six categories:
- Communication
- Collaboration
- Judgment
- Independence
- Feedback
- Problem solving
Each week, ask your teen to add one piece of evidence. Not a vague statement. Evidence.
They gave a short presentation. They emailed a teacher with a clear question. They helped plan a family budget. They revised an essay after feedback. They interviewed a business owner. They taught a younger sibling a math concept. They compared two sources before trusting an answer from AI.
Now you are not just hoping they are ready. You are watching readiness form.
The Parent Move This Week
Pick one human skill your child needs most right now.
If they avoid speaking, create one low-stakes speaking opportunity. If they struggle with follow-through, give them one project with a deadline. If they use AI for homework, ask them to show what they understood before and after using the tool.
Do not make this a lecture. Make it a record.
AI may change majors. It may change hiring. It may change what entry-level work looks like. But it does not remove the need for young people who can think, relate, adapt, and take responsibility.
That is the work families can start now.
